The Miracle of Sleep
Each night as you sleep your body undergoes a complex process of rejuvenation. There are three distinct levels of sleep. These levels can be identified by the frequency of brain wave activity. The graph below helps illustrate these levels.
|
 |
BETA
Between 14 and 32 brain wave cycles per second our minds are consciously aware and we are active. We think, we communicate, we solve problems, pay bills and in general deal with our conscious reality. As we do this we use energy and tire ourselves both mentally and physically. At the same time we file away in our subconscious minds the unpleasant & negative things that we are not able to rid ourselves of during the day. |
ALPHA
From 7 to 14444 cycles per second, R.E.M. or rapid eye movement sleep occurs. Most dreams take place at this level and this is probably the most important sleep in terms of mental health since dreams allow us to unload the frustrations, defeats and all the negative things that we pick up during the day. We literally “take out our mental garbage!” |
THETA
4 to 7 cycles per second. Not much is known about Theta sleep. It accounts for only a small percentage of our night’s sleep. During sleep we slide through Theta on our way to and from Alpha and Delta. Perhaps it allows us to dredge from our subconscious those disturbances which we examine symbolically in Alpha dreams. |
DELTA
When our brain’s activity drops below 4 cycles per second we are in our deepest level of sleep. Here our bodies are completely relaxed, heart rate & respiration slows, blood pressure & temperature fall and physical rejuvenation occurs. A growth hormone is released during Delta sleep which stimulates growth and cellular development. |
| |
THE SLEEP CYCLE |
Provided it is undisturbed, everyone’s sleep is regulated by their individual sleep cycle. Cycles average about 90 minutes each. When we go to sleep we drop on a sharp curve directly into Delta. We remain in Delta most of the first cycle, moving up into Alpha only the last 5 to 8 minutes. During each succeeding cycle the Alpha phase doubles over the proceeding cycle: ie. 5 to 8 minutes, 10 to 15, 20 to 30, 40 to 60, 80 to ? At the same time the Delta sleep is concentrated during the first part of the sleep and decreases in direct proportion with the increase in Alpha. |
 |
| |
THE IMPORTANCE OF UNDISTURBED SLEEP |
| It is easy to see why it is important to sleep as undisturbed as possible. If Delta sleep is disturbed, the growth hormone may never be produced in sufficient quantities to allow growth and rejuvenation. Good heavens! We could age before our time! On the other hand, if Alpha sleep is disturbed we never properly recharge our mental batteries. |

HOW QUALITY SLEEP ADDS TO YOUR LIFE |
Consistent good sleep helps your mind and body deal better with the tensions of life. It helps in the performance of mental and physical tasks: It helps ward off illness by keeping up resistance to infection: It helps reduce psychological problems by giving you the ability to handle your emotions better: You even look better because it refreshes your body and improves your disposition. |
| |
HOW POOR SLEEP DETRACTS FROM YOUR LIFE |
When you awaken from a night of low quality sleep - even 8 hours of it - you feel unrefreshed, unenergetic, unprepared to meet the tasks of the day: Your productivity suffers: Your resistance to infection is down. Night after night of poor sleep can result in psychosomatic ailments, anxiety, neurosis, difficulties in inter-personal relationships. It often goes hand in hand with mental illness. It leads to emotional instability, decreased daytime efficiency, even a slow reaction time which can result in an accident. |

WHERE YOU SLEEP DETERMINES HOW YOU SLEEP! |
In their widely acclaimed book INSOMNIA by Gay Gaer and Dr. Julius Segal, the authors state: “Some bed manufacturers have convinced the public that the firmness of a mattress is the criterion for selecting a good bed and by matching prices to the firmness of the bed they have reaped greater profits.” In truth, firmness can be a hindrance to proper sleep because it creates pressure points which cause us to toss and turn on an average of 50 to 80 times each night: A movement every 6 to 8 minutes all night long. The first men slept on piles of leaves. The innerspring beds of today are not much different: They are flat, relatively rigid and “dead” in that they do not conform to the body surface of the sleeper and cannot possibly support the small of the back, where support is needed the most. |

COMFORT LINE... THE IDEAL SLEEPING POSTURE! |
The Comfort Line concept is the direct result of constant testing, which determined that the ideal sleeping posture closely resembles that of the standing posture - with the ear shoulder, hip and ankle all in alignment. This posture helps reduce strain on the joints, minimizes pressure, and allows proper breathing, increasing the potential for quality sleep. Comfort Line was a breakthrough discovery and has been used as the blueprint for Digital Sleep products. |
